10 YEARS AGO TODAY: 19 August 2011Private First Class Douglas L. Cordo- U.S. Army.

Pfc. Cordo served with B Company, 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division (Light) during Operation Enduring Freedom. Pfc. Cordo volunteered to be the driver of the Stryker vehicle in support of his unit’s patrol in Zabul, Afghanistan on 19 August 2011. According to General John McGuinness, it was common for him to volunteer even when the mission might be dangerous. He was killed in action when an I.E.D. was detonated near his vehicle.

His Bronze Star citation reads “…No greater honor can be demonstrated by his ultimate sacrifice, and he will be forever remembered for his actions. Private First Class Cordo’s duty performance and selfless service are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the United States Forces – Afghanistan, and the United States Army.”
Douglas L. Cordo is a featured recipient in the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor’s Ultimate Sacrifice exhibit.
