What may initially appear to be a carved wooden hand is, in fact, a close-up view of Old Croghan Man, a remarkably preserved 2,300-year-old Iron Age bog body.

These bog bodies represent naturally mummified human remains discovered in peat bogs. Old Croghan Man was excavated in 2003 at Croghan Hill in County Offaly, Ireland.

The condition of his well-maintained nails suggests he enjoyed a life of high social status, free from the burdens of manual labor. His body was interred in a bog that likely once served as a lake, situated at the base of an ancient hill revered by Druids for their kingship ceremonies, possibly as a sacrificial offering to deities.

His remains are currently on display at the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin.
