This small island in Ehime Prefecture is famed for its thriving cat population, which vastly outnumbers its human residents, with an astonishing cat-to-human ratio nearing six to one. Originally, the cats were brought in to control a mouse problem that threatened local fishing boats. However, with few natural predators and a dwindling human population—primarily elderly residents—the cat population rapidly flourished.

Today, Aoshima draws tourists and cat enthusiasts from around the globe who come to witness and capture photos of the many cats roaming freely. Despite its appeal, the island has limited tourist infrastructure and few facilities, making visits relatively short, often lasting just a few hours.

Aoshima popularity underscores the deep affection and cultural respect for cats in Japan, where they are cherished as symbols of luck and prosperity.
