Having spent over 40 yrs on this earth and having a fairly decent understanding and interest in and of the fairly mundane nature of the UK (compared to other parts of the world) I found out something a few years back that completley surprised me… earthworms pull leaves into the soil. They dont rely on decay, thwy actively grab leaves and pull them down into the soil.
I was out blowing the leaves off my garden lawn last week and there were dozens of leaves tubularly pulled into the soil. Similar to the below photo.
I knew they were good composters, but actively pulling vegetation into the soil for processing really surprised me.
