Honoring the life and service to our country of US Army World War II Veteran, Private First Class ARVIN DOUGLAS WEBB, who died in the service of his country 79 years ago.

Son of Amos Jackson and Nannie Lorene-Webb. Two siblings, Robert Frank, and Doris Madiline. Attended Tenaha HS.

On June 30, 1942, six months following the United States entry into World War II, Arvin registered for the military draft in Center, Texas, the county seat of Shelby. His registration card noted his residence as Tenaha, age 18, and unemployed. He was described as white, five foot nine inches tall, 145 pounds, with gray eyes and brown hair.

He became Private Webb, serial # 38474679, when he took the oath of enlistment on February 24, 1943. The book “The Men and Women in World War II from Shelby County” listed his training at Camp Wolters, Texas and Camp San Obispo, California with service in Hawaii and New Guinea. Serving with the Company E. of the 1st Infantry he was wounded in action in New Guinea on July 9, 1944. PFC Webb was then sent to McCloskey General Hospital, Temple, Texas, where he died of his wounds on December 19, 1945.

Funeral services were held four days before Christmas at the Mangum Funeral Home Chapel in Center at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. W. D. Sherman officiating. He was laid to rest with full military honors in the Restland Cemetery, Tenaha, Texas. At the time, he was survived by his parents, brother Robert, sister Mrs. Doris Corley, and grandparents Mr. & Mrs. R. E. Black and Mrs. J. B. Webb. Day is done, God is nigh.
