It happened today in Hungarian history:

4 December 1536: Czeczey Lénárd took Kassa (Kaschau, Kosice)

Kassa was a key city of the Kingdom of Hungary, and after the Battle of Mohács, its German burghers opened its gates before the troops of Hans Katzianer, the general of King Habsburg Ferdinand.

During the sad years of the Dual Kingship, the burghers tended to support the Habsburgs. They called the other king, King Szapolyai “canis rex” (dog-king). Also, they placed a prize on the head of Szapolyai who ruled Eastern Hungary.

King Szapolyai could not permit having such a dangerous center of resistance so close to his country so he sent an army. The city was taken on 4 December 1536. The king’s general, Czeczey Lénárd led the army, and he was appointed as the captain of Kassa.

He punished the German burghers who had been hostile against King Szapolyai and immediately began to arrest the German members of the city council.

Those Germans who openly opposed the new rule were banished from the town and Hungarians were settled in their houses. The new Hungarian settlers came from those southern territories which lay in the throat of the Turks.

NOTE: IT WAS NOT NICE OF HIM BUT AT LEAST CZECZEY PAID THE PRICE OF THE BANISHED GERMANS’ PROPERTY IN CASH WHEN THEY LEFT THE CITY.
