Joshua Milton Blahyi commanded a small squadron of child soldiers during

One of the most brutal and unhinged warlords in history, Joshua Milton Blahyi commanded a small squadron of child soldiers during the First Liberian Civil War — who he ordered to fight completely in the nude. Likewise dressed only in sneakers and the magic charms he said made him and his comrades impenetrable to bullets, he gave himself the name he’s best known by to this day: General Butt Naked.

When Liberia splintered into bitterly opposing factions controlled by rival militias at the start of the 1990s, General Butt Naked’s forces quickly emerged as some of the most ruthless in the entire conflict. In the middle of one battle in April 1996, bystanders reported seeing the general triumphantly standing in the nude atop a truck holding an enemy’s severed penis and an assault rifle. He even reportedly ordered his child soldiers to tear out the hearts of their fallen enemies and eat them. In the end, not only did General Butt Naked survive the war, he became an evangelical minister and claims to have made amends with the families of many of his victims.
