NO LESS WORTHY

NO LESS WORTHY

Over the last decade, there has been a growing interest about the contribution made by Aboriginal men and women in times of war. While their involvement in our nation’s more recent conflicts is featured in many contemporary publications, until recently very little was known about Aboriginal service in World War I.

It is estimated that at least 1,000 Aboriginal people throughout Australia signed up to fight in WWI despite laws that prevented them from serving. In Western Australia, at least 135 Aboriginal men rushed to volunteer. Many of these men went on to actively serve in places such as the Middle East, the Western Front and the Gallipoli peninsula.

Of those who served overseas, 12 would sadly never make it home. Three received the Military Medal for acts of gallantry and bravery on the field.

This image from the State Library Collection of the 9th Reinforcements to the 10th Light Horse Regiment was taken at Blackboy Hill Training Camp in 1915. Pictured are two Aboriginal servicemen, Trooper William Ring (front row, first from left) and Private John Mason (back row, second from left).

Their stories and those of many others who helped shape the ANZAC Spirit are featured in the book “No Less Worthy”, researched and written by the Aboriginal History WA unit. FREE to download online here -https://www.dlgsc.wa.gov.au/department/publications/publication/no-less-worthy
