Once upon a time, in the Kadköy area of Istanbul, Turkey, there lived a cat named Tombili (a traditional Turkish name for overweight pets).

She was known for leaning against stairwells and staring at passers-by. Her kind personality was also well-known. When she died in early August 2016, a petition to honor her life gathered 17,000 signatures. Seval ahin, a local sculptor, made a sculpture that replicated her reclining stance.

The statue vanished a few months later, causing a public outcry. “They stole the Tombili monument,” a Turkish legislator was quoted as saying. They are the foes of all things lovely. Hatred, grief, and war are all they know.”
Two days later, the statue was returned.
