Technical Sergeant Gettings was awarded the Purple Heart on August 22, 1944 and on February 10, 1945 Lawrence was further awarded the Oak Leaf Cluster to the Purple Heart for an additional wound received at that time. Technical Sergeant Gettings was awarded the Bronze Star on February 27, 1945.
According to the Honor States Database:”On the 17th of April 1945, Lawrence Getting’s Company set outpost positions in the vicinity of Trabitz, Germany. The enemy attacked the positions which his squad was occupying and he was hit and instantly died as a result of devastating small arms and mortar fire.”
Lawrence was laid to rest at the United States Military Cemetery at Margraten, Holland after a Mass had been read by a Catholic Chaplain. Lawrence Gettings was 32 years old. Lest We Forget.
