The legendary Norwegian explorer, Leonhard Seppala, holds his lead dog, Togo.

Seppala, a prominent musher, is most famous for his role in the 1925 Serum Run to Nome, often referred to as the “Great Race of Mercy.”

In the winter of 1925, a diphtheria outbreak threatened the isolated town of Nome, Alaska. The only way to deliver the life-saving serum was through a relay of dog sled teams, racing over 674 miles of harsh, icy terrain in treacherous conditions. Seppala, with his trusty lead dog Togo, played a critical role in this heroic effort.

While Balto gained fame for completing the final leg, it was Togo who led Seppala on the longest and most dangerous stretch, covering nearly 260 miles through blizzards and sub-zero temperatures. Togo is remembered as the true hero of the Serum Run, for his incredible stamina, intelligence, and loyalty.
